BACK TO SCHOOL
Clang the gong and sound the
tocsin!
Dust the desks and black the
boards!
As we climb the stairs in
hordes.
Here we are with shrieks and
greetings,
"Look how sunburned you are"
meetings,
"How was camp?" and "How was
work?"
(Yes, we're back, Carlyle and
Burke!)
There are giggling groups of
classes
Watching each new boy who
passes.
Handsome tall ones raise a
rumpus.
(Hi, protractor, rule and
compass!
Hapless students stalk with
glowers,
Crowd the program room for
hours
Mixing up curricula.
(Ruhr and Saar, well here we
are!)
Many a lad and many a maiden
Stoop with heavy volumes laden,
Book-bags, clipboards, loose-
leafs, too.
(Estamous Aqui; Ice sommis-
nous!
O'Ray for knowledge! What is
finer!
We shall hear of Heinrich
Heine,
Marco Polo's trip to China,
Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Yes, we're here, we're back
again
With open notebook, waiting
pen,
In stern pursuit of education
Laughing, but with deep elation.
